The Master of Sacred Music Program’s purpose is to train professional musicians for work in Christian churches and to prepare those who desire it for the Doctorate in Musical Arts in performance or the Ph.D. in music history, ethnomusicology or liturgics. Students are admitted with concentrations in organ, choral conducting or voice. Through a program of study that takes advantage of Notre Dame’s strengths in music performance, music history, music theory, and liturgical studies, graduates of the program develop high degrees of musical skill, as they also gain working knowledge of the worship lives of Christian congregations, integrating the artistic, scholarly and pastoral dimensions requisite for the profession. All students have internships, many in local churches or in the Notre Dame Children’s Choir. Good posts for our graduates are plentiful, and we enjoy a placement rate of nearly 100%, whereas other graduates move on to the DMA or Ph.D. in prestigious programs.
