Each year, several of Notre Dame's top graduate students in science and engineering are selected as Arthur J. Schmitt Leadership Fellows, receiving full-tuition scholarships and annual stipends of $42,000, on a 12-month basis. Support is guaranteed for five years as long as the fellow is making satisfactory progress toward his or her degree.
Notre Dame's Schmitt Fellowships are funded in part by the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation. An inventor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Schmitt held thirteen patents during his lifetime, founded the Amphenol Company, and donated extensively to charities in and around the Chicago area. His foundation supports his particular commitment to fostering graduate studies at Catholic universities in the Great Lakes region, and has played an important role in the advancement of graduate studies and research in engineering and science at Notre Dame for over four decades.
