Professional Development
We believe that graduate training is holistic. For this reason, we promote our students’ professional development so that when they assume their careers — whether in academia, the private sector, government, or non-governmental organizations — they do so fully prepared and with confidence.
Teaching is one of the most important areas of professional development regardless of career destination. Notre Dame’s renowned teaching tradition leads our graduate students quite naturally to pair themselves with superb faculty mentors. A number of doctoral programs have formal training in pedagogical development. All doctoral students have access to the Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning and its full array of workshops, presentations, and consultations highlighting the best teaching practices. Students may earn teaching certificates from the Kaneb Center by taking coherent sets of workshops and courses.
We provide funding through academic centers and Graduate School endowments for other aspects of professional development, for example, research, conference attendance, acquisition of grant-writing skills, and specialized instruction.
Our active Career Center, with one counselor dedicated to the placement of graduate students, helps with self-assessment, résumé writing, interviewing skills, and other steps on the way to securing the position of your choice after graduation.
