Welcome to the Graduate School at the University of Notre Dame. Graduate studies represent the transition from a student to a scholar, from a student researcher to a scientist, from a solver of problems posed by a professor to an engineer who solves the problems posed by the larger world, from a student of the arts to an artist whose stage is the world.
We foster this transition in a selective environment that combines open enquiry with a respect for faith, mental acuity with a passion to solve the problems of the world, and advancement of the frontiers of human knowledge with an appreciation of our place in history.
Graduate school is not easy, nor should it be. It challenges each aspiring artist, engineer, scientist, or scholar to stretch beyond what was previously possible. At the same time, it is affirming. It rewards excellence and celebrates creative insight. Those who understand the thrill of discovery and the potential of communicating new discoveries to the larger world find a home in our Graduate School.
If you share this vision, this could be your home. I invite you to explore the Graduate School’s website to learn about our many excellent programs. You will find information about the specifics of particular programs and also discover the spirit that animates our work. This is a unique research university. Anchored securely in the Catholic tradition, it reaches out to people of all faiths or even no faith. Unafraid to ask questions of value or faith, we are passionately committed to the pursuit of truth, wherever truth resides.
Again, welcome. I hope that I will have the privilege of meeting you personally and welcoming you to the Graduate School at the University of Notre Dame.
Sincerely,
Greg Sterling
