at Notre Dame in 2004-05, an international student expected
to incur the following expenses:

Description of Expenses
Tuition:
The
$29,200 tuition price listed here did not include additional
educaitonal fees, books or enrollment in summer sessions.
Tuition for the 2004 summer session was $302 per credit
hour. Please see the tuition, fees
and financial support page for more tuition information.
Living Expenses:
Living
expenses of $9,000/ academic year included the minimum cost
of housing and food for a nine-month period for a single
person. They did not include the cost of:
- transportation
- recreation
- clothing
- other personal needs
- supporting dependents.
Living Expenses for Dependents
The estimated
cost of support for a spouse was an additional $3,000
an academic year. For each child it was $2,500. This did
not include the cost of private school tuition, fees,
or supplies for the child. Public schools are tuition-free.
Medical Insurance:
International
students are now required to carry medical insurance. The
cost of medical insurance for the year 2004-2005 is $999
for a single student. Contact Health Services for more
information about health insurance.
Medical Care for Dependents
Medical care
is very expensive. The US does not have socialized medicine
and individuals are responsible for their own health care. The
University strongly recommends that all family members
be enrolled in the University-sponsored health insurance
plan. For 2004-2005, care for dependents was offered under
two plans with different costs reflecting the level of
coverage chosen:
- $2,421 to $4,942 for a spouse
- $3,304 to $7,519 for a family
- $1,279 or $3,537 for all children and $1,912 for
a single child
J-1 and J-2 family members are required by federal law to
carry medical insurance. See further
information about Visa categories.
These insurance plans do not cover all medical expenses; they
do not provide comprehensive health insurance with major medical
coverage or benefits for eye, dental, or wellness care. Services
such as dental care and eye examinations should be taken care
of before coming to the US.
International students and their dependents are not eligible for
government assistance or loans for either living or medical expenses.
Affidavit of Support
Upon being accepted for admission, an international applicant
may be required to file an Affidavit of Support with the Graduate
Admissions office, in order to establish proof of the applicant's
willingness and ability to meet all tuition and living expenses
while at Notre Dame.
- If admitted to the University with neither a tuition scholarship
nor a stipend, the applicant must show proof of his/her
ability to pay tuition, living expenses, and health insurance,
in the amount of at least $38,200.
- If awarded a tuition scholarship only, the applicant must supply
an affidavit of support testifying to his/her ability to pay at
least $9,000 in living expenses and medical insurance.
Upon admission,
every applicant who wishes to bring his/her family to the
US must complete an affidavit of support to show proof of
additional financial security in the amount of $3,000 for
the spouse and $2,500 for each child per academic year.
An applicant who does not intend to bring his/her family to the
United States need not file an affidavit of support if admitted
to the University with a full tuition scholarship and stipend.
Note: These figures are for the
year 2004-2005 only. Costs rise approximately 9% each year.
