Student Spotlight: Biochemist Doug Rice Reflects on the 2014 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

This past June at the 64th "Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting":http://www.lindau-nobel.org/2014_Lindau_Meeting__Physiology_Medicine.AxCMS?ActiveID=2782, 37 Nobel Laureates met 600 young scientists from around the world — including University of Notre Dame graduate student *Douglas Rice* — to share their knowledge, establish new contacts, and discuss such topics as global health, the latest findings in cancer or AIDS research, challenges in immunology, and future research approaches to medicine.

Graduate student Claire Chow selected as Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholar

All are possible thanks to advances in the field of biometrics — the field in which Notre Dame Computer Science and Engineering doctoral student *Estefan Ortiz* spends his days — and, frequently, his nights.

Notre Dame researchers point to errors in NIST report on iris aging

University of Notre Dame biometrics researchers "Kevin Bowyer":http://news.nd.edu/for-the-media/nd-experts/faculty/kevin-bowyer/ and "Estefan Ortiz":http://engineering.nd.edu/profiles/eortiz have released a paper that points to errors in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report on how iris aging affects the accuracy of iris recognition. In addition to describing specific methodological errors in the NIST report, Bowyer and Ortiz presented a list of suggestions to be addressed in a revised version of the NIST report.

Alumnus Charles Leavitt Accepts Position at University of Reading

Charles Leavitt, who received his Ph.D. in literature from Notre Dame in 2010, has accepted a position at the University of Reading as a lecturer in Italian studies—equivalent to assistant professor in the American university system. Located in Reading, England, the school is ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world.

Reflections on the 63rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting

This past summer, four University of Notre Dame graduate students in the "Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry":http://chemistry.nd.edu/ attended the prestigious "Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings":http://www.lindau-nobel.org/. In its 63rd year, the Lindau meetings bring together Nobel Laureates with young researchers to “educate, inspire, and connect.”
