The 2nd Annual Notre Dame Akai 5K Run/3K Walk

Update 7/15: Due to predictions of strong storms with lightning, the Terry Akai Run/Walk has been canceled. For those who registered and paid in advance, please come to 105 Main Building (Golden Dome) to pick up your T-shirt over the next few weeks. All those who have not registered but wish to contribute to the Terry Akai Fund for graduate students may still make a contribution by sending a check to the ND Development Office along with a note specifying that it is for the Akai Scholarship.

The Summer Session Office and the Office of the Registrar will host the second annual Notre Dame Akai 5K Run/Walk on July 15 at 6 p.m. The event will benefit a graduate student scholarship fund set up in memory of Dr. Terry Akai, former associate dean of the Graduate School.

This event is open to the public, as well as to Notre Dame, Holy Cross and St. Mary’s community members.

  • When: Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 6 p.m.
  • Registration: Online registration ($20) is now open. Note: There are no refunds if the event is canceled. Weather conditions do vary and the event could potentially be cancelled if severe weather occurs.

5K Run Course Characteristics: The 5K (3.1 mile) road and trail course will take runners past many famous Notre Dame landmarks. Participants will start on the South Quad, proceed past 100+ year old residence halls such as Walsh Hall and Alumni Hall. The course then heads up the Main Quad and circles around the famous Golden Dome. Participants then are treated to a beautiful figure eight loop around the two scenic and serene lakes on Notre Dame’s campus. Finally, runners proceed past the Golden Dome for a second time and down to the finish on the South Quad. The course is relatively flat and only has one hill about 50 yards in length. 3K Walk Course Characteristics: The 3K (1.8 mile) road and trail course will take walkers past many famous Notre Dame landmarks. Participants will start on the South Quad, proceed past 100+ year old residence halls such as Walsh Hall and Alumni Hall. The course then circles Saint Mary’s Lake. Finally, walkers proceed past the Golden Dome for a second time and down to the finish on the South Quad. The course is relatively flat and only has one hill about 50 yards in length. Water Stations: There are two opportunities to obtain water on the course from a water station.

Prizes: Trophies to the 1st-place male and female.

Parking: If you are coming from off campus, you can park in the D6 parking lot located behind the WNDU Studios, off State Road 933. From the D6 lot, it is about a 200 yard walk to the start/finish line located near the South Dining Hall. See the parking map for more detail.

Special Announcement: Although the Akai 5K Run/3K Walk is open to the public, we have a special event planned specifically for Notre Dame, Holy Cross and St. Mary’s students. Following the 5K on Thursday, July 15, 2010, the Student Activities Office will host a Quad Party outside of the South Dining Hall, featuring live music and quad games. Please join us for a full evening of fun! The Quad Party will commence at 6:30 p.m.
