Notre Dame Graduate Students Win a Record Amount of Funding through External Grants and Fellowships

In the past academic year, Notre Dame graduate students were awarded a record amount in fellowships and grants—$4.24 million—from organizations and entities around the world. The 2013-2014 cumulative award amount is $1.1 million more than the previous academic year and represents a 14% increase in the number of students applying for outside awards.

Notre Dame Graduate School and Reilly Center Win NSF Grant to Study How to Best “Cultivate Cultures” for Ethical Leaders in STEM disciplines

The University of Notre Dame’s Graduate School and John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values have won a National Science Foundation grant in the amount of $410,340 for a project that will study what training content and methods most successfully help STEM students become ethical leaders.

Student Spotlight: Robert Lester, Economics, and Renato Ghini Bettiol, Mathematics, Offer Reflections on the 2014 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting on Economics and the Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Mathematics and Computer Science

Over the past four years, graduate students at the University of Notre Dame have been selected to participate in the prestigious "Lindau Laureate Meetings":http://www.lindau-nobel.org/2012_62nd_Lindau_Meeting.AxCMS —which provide a forum for Nobel Laureates to meet with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from around the world. The guiding principle of the meetings is to “Educate. Inspire. Connect.” The laureates fulfill that promise by interacting with their younger counterparts, who also use the meetings to learn from and network with each other—and so advance knowledge worldwide in their generation.

Army veteran Luis Morales honored by NSF in Washington, D.C.

Physics graduate student and U.S. Army veteran Luis Morales is one of 11 military veterans who was honored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) with Graduate Research Fellowships on November 5, 2014 in Washington, D.C. During the official visit to the NSF headquarters, the group was recognized with a formal ceremony highlighting veterans and their contributions to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

Announcing the Reilly Center’s training programs for graduate students

The John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values has expanded its menu of training options for University of Notre Dame graduate students. Since August of 2013, three supplementary training and degree programs have been added and are open for graduate student enrollment. The new offerings advance understanding of the connections between science, technology, and society while broadening a traditional PhD or Master’s degree program of study.

Graduate student Claire Chow selected as Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholar

Notre Dame researchers point to errors in NIST report on iris aging

University of Notre Dame biometrics researchers "Kevin Bowyer":http://news.nd.edu/for-the-media/nd-experts/faculty/kevin-bowyer/ and "Estefan Ortiz":http://engineering.nd.edu/profiles/eortiz have released a paper that points to errors in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report on how iris aging affects the accuracy of iris recognition. In addition to describing specific methodological errors in the NIST report, Bowyer and Ortiz presented a list of suggestions to be addressed in a revised version of the NIST report.
